🌍 Africa’s Ascent: Reinventing Public Health & Fortifying Health Systems 🌍
The African continent has demonstrated remarkable leadership in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic by drawing on experiences from past outbreaks and swiftly implementing measures to reduce the virus’s effects.
However, challenges like unequal access to medical supplies persist, partly because only 1% of Africa’s vaccine needs are manufactured locally.
To tackle these deep-rooted public health concerns, the African Union, with Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), has introduced “A New Public Health Order for Africa” to enhance health outcomes throughout the region.

◼ A cornerstone of the New Public Health Order is the local manufacturing of health products. A viable approach for Africa involves high-volume, low-margin production, departing from the conventional pharma model.
◼ The World Bank estimates that Africa requires $2 billion to $3.5 billion annually for epidemic preparedness. Prioritizing investments in health workers, domestic financing, and enhanced monitoring, evaluation, and learning is essential.
◼ CDC Africa’s technical and direct support to National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) is crucial in bolstering the continent’s disease response and public health protection. By championing comprehensive continental surveillance coverage, CDC aids in the establishment of upgraded, fully operational National Public Health Emergency Operations Centers (PHEOCs) across the continent. These resources should focus on creating resilient systems, optimizing processes, and fostering specialized expertise—all vital for the effective operation of these indispensable public health organizations.
◼ The digital age presents vast opportunities to enhance the speed and precision of identifying and addressing potential outbreaks. Emphasized technological advancements include digital primary care delivery, connected diagnostics, and telemedicine, driven by artificial intelligence and machine learning.
